Lia Thomas and Riley Gaines disagree about 'competitive fairness'

As Jazz pointed out earlier there’s a bill making its way through congress which would prevent trans women from competing against girls in school sports. Yesterday the White House announced that, even if the bill passes, Biden will veto it. There’s another battle taking place over these issues involving a proposed change to Title IX.

The Biden administration’s proposed rule announced earlier this month would establish that blanket bans, like those that have been approved in at least 20 states, would violate Title IX, the landmark gender-equity legislation enacted in 1972. But schools that receive federal funding could still adopt policies that limit transgender students’ participation, particularly in more competitive high school and college sports.

The fact that Biden’s proposed rule would allow any restrictions on trans women competing in any sport means that trans activists are against it. Trans swimmer Lia Thomas posted a video on Instagram yesterday urging people to complain about the proposed rule.

“The Department of Education has proposed a new rule for Title IX regarding transgender athletes; this rule would prohibit blanket bans on transgender kids, especially in grades K through 8. However, it would not prohibit discrimination against trans kids in the high school and college levels under the guise of competitive fairness.”…

Said Thomas: “This rule is a good start. However, it is not enough. During this time of intense anti-trans backlash, the trans community needs explicit protection from discrimination in order to live our lives freely and equally.”

The claim that this was under the “guise of competitive fairness” caught the attention of Riley Gaines who has become a spokesperson arguing women should not have to compete against trans women in sports. You can also watch Thomas’s full statement about the rule if you’re so inclined.

It’s pretty amazing that after blowing away all of the women in the NCAA division I titles Lia Thomas thinks “competitive fairness” is just a ruse. Lia Thomas is the poster child for what happens when you don’t preserve competitive fairness, i.e. someone with a man’s body steps in and claims the win from actual women.

Gaines was on Piers Morgan’s show last night to talk about the issue. Here’s that segment. Near the end of this Gaines criticizes the women who want to virtue signal their kindness and inclusivity by throwing female athletes under the trans bus. “In reality, it’s not kind to ask a girl to share a locker room with a man who is fully equipped with and exposing male parts. It’s not inclusive to ask a woman to smile and step aside on the podium so a man can take her trophy and take her spot and her honors.”
