Mass shooting in Louisville leaves 4 dead, several injured (Update: Suspect live-streamed the attack)

This just happened so details are still coming in. A shooter walked into Old National Bank in Louisville, KY and began firing. Four people are confirmed to have died and several more were injured. The shooter was still firing when police arrived.

Louisville Metro Police Department Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey told reporters officers who arrived on the scene “encountered active gunshots still being fired inside the location at that time.”

Officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter, who appeared to be a former employee of the bank, but it wasn’t clear how he died.

“We do not know exactly the circumstances of his death at this time,” Humphrey said.

So if you include the shooter, that makes a total of five dead. In addition, another 6-8 people were injured and taken to the hospital, including two police officers who responded to the scene. One of the officers was shot in the head and has been listed in critical condition. A local Louisville news station spoke to some eyewitnesses. They described the shooter entering a conference room and opening fire.

A witness who was inside the building told WHAS11 they saw a man with a “long assault rifle” fire multiple shots inside the bank on the first floor, near the conference room area.

“He just started firing,” he said. “I didn’t see his face. We were in the conference room. Whoever was next to me got shot, their blood’s on me.”

Another witness, who works in an office building facing the bank, said the shooter and law enforcement officers got into a “shootout.” They said civilians were being carried out.

Here’s video of one witness who happened to be just outside the conference room when the shooting started.

At least a portion of the shooting was caught on video. You can’t see who is firing in this clip but you do see a police officer running into traffic and telling everyone to get out of their cars and run.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear went to the scene and made a statement. He said he knew two of the victims as well as one of the people taken to the hospital with injuries. “I have a very close friend who didn’t make it today,” he said.

Police have said the shooter has a connection to the bank and appears to be a “previous employee.” So it’s looking like there was some sort of personal motive, i.e. maybe he was fired recently for what happened this morning.

The name of the shooter is circulating online but I haven’t seen an official announcement of that yet so I’m going to hold off a bit before posting it. Frequently after incidents like this some of the early information later turns out to be wrong. I’ll update this as soon as there’s an official statement. That should be at 3 pm local time when the police give another update.

Update: Police have identified the suspect who they say livestreamed his attack:

The suspect has been identified as Connor Sturgeon, 23, who was employed at the Old National Bank. He used a rifle to commit the mass shooting, according to LMPD Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel.

Police said the suspect was live-streaming the shooting on social media.

She identified the victims as Tommy Elliott, 63; James Tutt, 64; Joshua Barrick, 40; and Juliana Farmer, 57 — all were employees at the bank.
