Whoopi Goldberg kinda sorta comes out against cancel culture

Whoopi Goldberg has said a lot of crazy things on the View over the years but recently she’s gotten in trouble quite a few times and been forced to apologize. Last year she was suspended for saying the Holocaust wasn’t about race. She then went on Stephen Colbert’s show and did her best to walk it back but really didn’t do a great job. In fact, she arguably doubled down on the idea that the Nazi’s weren’t really racists. More recently she had to film an apology for using a slur associated with gypsies during a discussion.

All of that clearly came back today when the View discussed an anchor woman who was recently fired for quoting a Snoop Dogg lyric on air.

Long-time WLBT journalist and meteorologist Barbie Bassett is no longer listed as a member of its news team as social media reports suggest she has been removed from her morning anchor position for racially insensitive comments.

Bassett’s bio has been removed from the WLBT Website where all of the on-air bios are located.

WLBT officials did not return phone calls, emails or texts related to Bassett’s status. In a message via social media, WLBT Vice President and General Manager Ted Fortenberry said, “As I am sure you can understand, WLBT is unable to comment on personnel matters.”

On-air employees declined to comment, directing all questions to management. Bassett did not respond to direct messages on Twitter, Facebook and her personal Website.

Here’s the clip and, as you can see, she said this after someone else brought up Snoop Dogg.

So today, Whoopi was clearly worked up by the idea that someone should be fired for saying something rather than given a chance to apologize. “You might want to start with ‘Hey, maybe that wasn’t the smartest thing to say’ as opposed to ‘You’re out!’,” Goldberg said. She added, “That’s just me, having been in this situation before.”

The other co-hosts batted it around a bit but by the end Whoopi really did seem irritated with the whole thing.

“There has to be a book of stuff that nobody could ever say, ever, ever, ever. Include everything,” she said. “The things that change, you can say this, but you can’t say that, but next week you might not be able to say this, it’s hard to keep up. It’s hard to keep up. And if you’re a person of a certain age, there’s stuff we do, and we say.”

“It’s hard to keep up,” she said. That’s certainly true these days though I don’t think her comments about the Holocaust really fall under the category of things that snuck up on us. To that point she made a general plea of ignorance for people on television.

“We don’t know everything you’re not supposed to do. And if there is something someone says, if you’re not going to give them the opportunity to explain why they said it, at least give them the grace of saying ‘you know what, I’ve just been informed that I should not of done that,’ as opposed to ‘you’re out.’ Because saying ‘you’re out’ means that you don’t want to hear what people have to say or the mistakes that they might have made that could have helped somebody else not make that mistake,” she continued.

Anyway, she’s clearly thinking about herself but give her some credit for trying to generalize that and apply what she’s learned the hard way to others in the same situation. Give people some grace is a better approach than trying to get people fired the instant they make a mistake.

“And there’s no rehabilitation,” Sunny Hostin added. That’s something that many on the right have been saying about woke cancel culture for years.

“No, there’s none,” Whoopi agreed.

Maybe next time she can just say “cancel culture sucks” and leave it at that. Here’s the segment.
