11-year-old hero helped save two people in one day

Davyon Johnson is living his best life. The 11-year-old who lives in Muskogee, Oklahoma was recently honored with three separate awards for his quick action helping to rescue two people in one day. First, he helped save a choking classmate at school. Principal Latricia Dawkins told a local news outlet how it happened:

She said a student was trying to fill his water bottle and trying to loosen the cap with his mouth. The cap slipped into his throat, she said.

The choking student stumbled into a nearby classroom, where Davyon happened to be, she said.

“Davyon immediately sprinted over and did the Heimlich maneuver,” Dawkins said. “From the account of the witnesses, when he did it the bottle cap popped out.”

Davyon later explained that he learned the Heimlich maneuver on YouTube, so this wasn’t just chance. He prepared himself for this moment. And he wasn’t done that day. Later as he was walking home from school, he noticed a house that was on fire. A disabled woman was trying to get out but not moving very quickly.

“I thought ‘oh, she’s not moving fast enough.’ So I ran across the street and helped her to her truck,” Davyon told News On 6 cameras.

No one who knows Davyon was surprised by his quick-thinking nature, as he wants to be an EMT.

Davyon’s mother, LaToya Johnson, told Enid News & Eagle, “I’m just a proud mom.”

For his efforts, Davyon was given three awards, one from the local police department naming him an honorary officer. One from the Sheriff’s department making him an honorary deputy (seen above) and a “Heroism Award” from his school. His principal called him a “dual hero.”

Congratulations to Davyon for being a great kid. I’m guessing in a few more years he’s going to have no problem becoming an EMT if that’s what he decides to do. BTW, I once used the Heimlich on someone who was choking and it worked. The woman I helped had been drinking a bit and seemed pretty embarrassed by it but it did feel good helping. So on top of the awards, that feeling is something Davyon can take with him.

While we’re on the subject of kid heroes, do you remember Bridger Walker? He’s the little boy from Wyoming who, at six years old, jumped in front of an aggressive German Shepard to rescue his 4-year-old sister? He was seriously injured by the dog, receiving 90 stitches to his face, but explained his decision by saying, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”

Bridger got a lot of attention from members of the Avengers cast at the time one of whom, Tom Holland, promised he could come on set for the next movie. Last week, Holland made that happen. Bridger’s family posted photos of the visit:

They also posted a long and heartfelt thank you to Tom Holland, his brother Harry and his co-star Zendaya:

The look on the kids’ faces was priceless when we rounded the blue-screen to see Tom, in full costume, high above the set on a light post. It was emotional to see him wave at the kids like he was the one that was supposed to be excited – not the other way around.

A short time later, Tom and Zendaya came over. I will never forget the grace and kindness they showed our children. Zendaya immediately approached my teenage daughter and told her how much she loved her nails. 💗💅 I don’t know if she will ever know how much that simple act means to me – to see my sweet daughter light up with self-confidence and joy.

Harry Holland was our personal guide throughout the day – and all I can say is his parents (@dommoholland and @nikkihollandphotography) must be so proud. Such a gentleman and genuinely good person. I cannot imagine there are more humble and gracious young men in all of Hollywood than the Holland boys.

Anyway, consider this a little Christmas week reminder that, despite how sick we all feel of dealing with COVID for the past two years on top of everything else happening in the world, there are still a lot of good people out there doing good things. It’s great to see them get the appreciation and recognition they deserve.
