Project Veritas: ABC reporter says networks' interest in Trump is outrage, investigation and backstabbing

Project Veritas released another undercover video this morning, this one featuring ABC reporter David Wright. Wright is seen discussing the state of the news business at an informal gathering for media professionals held in a bar.

During the discussion, Wright admits to being a socialist and not just a Democratic Socialist like Bernie Sanders. According to a recent study of journalists based on their Twitter interactions, that makes him just like most journalists. In keeping with his socialist views, Wright criticized ABC News as having become a just another profit center for its owner. “Like now, you can’t watch Good Morning America without there being a Disney princess or a Marvel Avenger appearing. It’s all self-promotional,” he said.

What’s most revealing in this casual conversation is the degree to which political news has become an embarrassment even to those who produce it. Speaking about coverage of President Trump, Wright said, “We don’t hold him to account. We also don’t give him credit for what things he does do.” In fact, Wright said when it comes to the president his network and others are really only interested in three things: “We’re interested in the outrage of the day, the investigation, and of the palace intrigue of who’s backstabbing whom.” He adds, “Beyond that, we don’t really cover the guy.”

Coincidentally, all of the things ABC is interested in covering are negatives for the president. Elsewhere in the conversation Wright expressed some frustration with coverage of Trump, though he seems to wish the coverage could be more aggressively anti-Trump: “We have this f**king president and we can’t figure out how to challenge him.”

They say the first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Another ABC producer named Andy Fies said he often hears people in New York who are wondering “How can people like Donald Trump?” Fies said those people need to get outside their bubble. “Cross the Hudson now and then and come out and spend some time, and you’ll hear why,” he said. Fies added, “we don’t understand voters” apparently meaning ABC News.

Maybe that’s because so many of the people working there are highly-paid socialists and most Americans are not? Maybe instead of just bringing the socialists outside the bubble once in a while ABC could hire some people who aren’t socialists to work in the New York offices?

Somehow that option never seems to gather much steam with the media. The one thing that might actually impact the coverage a bit for the better, i.e. some genuine ideological diversity, never happens. People inside the media may be self-aware enough to notice they are living in a bubble, but that doesn’t mean they will do anything to change it.

Wright has already been suspended from his job with ABC “to avoid any possible appearance of bias.” That’s apparently in reaction to his admission in the clip that he’s a socialist. ABC says he will return but not to political coverage. I guess that’s something but I’d be willing to bet the person who replaces him won’t be much different. I suspect it’s socialists all the way down at ABC.
