Kavanaugh: I was a virgin through high school and 'for many years thereafter'

The Kavanaugh interview with Fox News’ Martha MacCallum will be airing about the time this story goes up. However, there are already some snippets from the interview circulating online. This one, in particular, seems likely to ignite all the hot takes.

“I’ve never sexually assaulted anyone,” Kavanaugh says. He adds, “I did not have sexual intercourse or anything close to sexual intercourse in high school or for many years thereafter. And the girls from the schools I went to and I were friends.”

MacCallum clarifies: “So you’re saying through all these years that are in question you were a virgin?”

“That’s correct.”

So let’s step through the obvious here. Kavanaugh would be crazy to lie about this because it would be very easy for one girlfriend to contact Ronan Farrow and say it’s not true. He even went beyond the intercourse question to say nothing “close to” intercourse. So I think it’s a pretty safe bet he’s telling the truth about this knowing a lie would be easily found out.

Of course, neither of the allegations against Kavanaugh, by Ford and Ramirez, involve sexual intercourse, so saying he was a virgin doesn’t automatically prove his innocence. However, it does somewhat re-frame the question of his youthful behavior. There were people pointing to Kavanaugh’s involvement in a frat in college and some of his yearbook statements in high school who suggested he was a hard-drinking libertine. This statement undercuts that characterization pretty strongly. If Kavanaugh was really running with a fast crowd in high school and college he probably wouldn’t have remained a virgin well into his college years.

Don’t be shocked if the left now reverses course and portrays Kavanaugh as an angry, repressed incel instead of a wild frat boy. The left really doesn’t care too much about the details, only the results. And that’s also why I doubt this interview will move the needs with the left-wing partisans, though it might get through to some regular people. In a sign that the left is perhaps worried about that possibility, some have already declared the interview a “challenge-free infomercial” before even seeing it.

The clip below is cued up to Kavanaugh’s virginity statement, but if you stick with it Martha MacCallum comes on right after to talk about her interview. She says she asked Kavanaugh every difficult question including delving into “the graphic nature” of some of the allegations. We’ll know shortly if that’s the case.
