Antifa gets violent in downtown Portland, 2 arrested

There were clashes in downtown Portland Sunday as Antifa squared off with the group Patriot’s Prayer. From KATU:

Members of “Antifa” initially showed up [at] the peaceful rally, but quickly made their way to the Patriot Prayer “Freedom March” several blocks away. The two groups quickly clashed. Several violent fights were witnessed by KATU News crews throughout the area, but as opposed to previous protests, there was little to no police presence breaking up the groups.

Clashes between Antifa and Patriot Prayer moved toward the peaceful rally further north on the waterfront. Organizers quickly moved across the street to avoid any conflict.

Video from KOIN 6 shows one Antifa member running across a park and kicking someone from the opposing group. That starts a scuffle as one man tries to grab the attacker and hold on to him. Later, several members of Antifa are seen attacking someone on the ground using sticks, though it’s not clear what happened immediately before this.

Fox 12 reports two people were arrested and one person was given a citation and taken to the hospital:

Shortly after police arrived, a 16-year-old boy was arrested for disorderly conduct in the second degree and a felony probation warrant for burglary in the second degree, reckless burning and criminal mischief. He was booked into the Donald E. Long Detention Home.

Officers cited and released 21-year-old Tusitala Toese on a charge of disorderly conduct in the second degree. He was issued a criminal citation instead of being booked into jail because of an injury he sustained during the protest that required medical treatment at a hospital.

Officers also arrested 24-year-old Jonny Perez for disorderly conduct in the second degree, interfering with a police officer, and escape in the third degree. He was booked into the Multnomah County Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Here’s another video clip showing some of the violence.

Portland is a stronghold for Antifa and these kinds of clashes have become a recurring part of life in the city. During a similar face-off in June, 14 people were arrested. From CNN:

What began as a tense exchange of name-calling and profane insults took a turn when counterdemonstrators began throwing glass bottles, bricks and balloons of “foul-smelling liquid” at officers, Portland police said. Officers used pepper spray to push back the counterdemonstrators and closed the park where they had gathered, threatening to arrest anyone who remained.

Portland police did not indicate which side those arrested belonged to. CNN crews on the scene observed that most of the arrests were concentrated in the area of counterdemonstrators.

The counterdemonstrators, in that case, were Antifa, some of whom were found with bags of bricks they intended to use as weapons.
