Black Lives Matter protest leader Deray McKesson made a fool of himself yesterday. He suggested on Twitter that a new poster for the movie War for the Planet of the Apes was mocking him because the poster features a chimp wearing a blue vest. Here’s a closeup of the center of the movie poster. That character on the right is the one that Deray apparently thinks was a dig at him.
Deray put up two tweets about this outrage which he has since deleted, but not quickly enough:

Today Whoopi Goldberg took a moment to point out the absurdity of Deray’s hot take on The View saying, “Deray, you need to go back and watch the 1968 original and check out what the apes were wearing.” She continued, “This has nothing to do with you.” After saying the movie was about how we treat animals and each other Whoopi added, “Get over yourself.”
It’s pretty rare that someone like Deray gets called out on any network besides Fox News, much less by an Academy Award winning actress. So enjoy this rare moment that shows what the world might be like if Hollywood held fellow progressives to the same standards they routinely hold conservatives. Kudos to Goldberg for not holding back. [h/t for this clip to GossipCop]

Deray responded on Twitter after the show aired blaming unidentified tipsters within Hollywood for his original dopey tweets:
.@WhoopiGoldberg, if you have something to say, I'm here.

Now, with the #PlanetOfTheApes poster & toy, I was contacted by folks within Hollywood who thought there was an issue, hence those tweets.

After speaking with even more people about the history of the film, I deleted the tweets.

This isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. McKesson was one of the most high-profile people on Twitter who spread the claim that Sandra Bland had been murdered by police while in custody. Only that wasn’t true. As the autopsy and other evidence showed, Bland killed herself. The problem with Deray is that he’s in the business of making racial accusations but he’s often careless with those accusations. That’s not the sort of thing that adds much credibility to his cause.
