Donald Trump took to Twitter yesterday and today to blast Hillary Clinton for her blatant hypocrisy in joining the recount effort started by Green Party candidate Jill Stein. But toward the end of his Twitter rant, the President-elect threw out an aside about millions of illegal voters that overshadowed the point he had been making. Trump’s criticism of the recount effort began Saturday evening:

Trump resumed talking about the recount effort Sunday morning.

Trump’s first reference above is to Hillary’s statement about accepting the results of the election during the final debate:

This is a mindset. This is how Donald thinks. And it’s funny but it’s also really troubling. That is not the way our democracy works. We’ve been around for 240 years. We’ve had free and fair elections. We’ve accepted the outcomes when we may not have like them and that is what must be expected of anyone standing a debate stage during a general election. You know President Obama said the other day, ‘when you’re whining before the game is even finished, you’re not up to doing the job.’ Let’s be clear about what he is saying and what that means. He is denigrating, he’s is talking down our democracy and I, for one, am appalled that somebody who is the nominee of one of our two major parties would take that kind of position.
But Sunday afternoon Trump added a few additional thoughts:

Trump just finished saying (earlier today) that the recount wouldn’t matter. He’s right that it won’t change anything except to make Hillary look like a raging hypocrite. Why add the bit about millions of people who voted illegally, something which he cannot back up and which only brings up an argument (the results of the popular vote) that doesn’t matter anyway? The proper response to anyone who says Hillary won the popular vote is, “So what?” Leave it at that. Why start arguing about a counter-factual when you won? Trump is the next President of the United States. That should be enough.
