Howard Kurtz: Media response to Orlando has been 'ugly'

On Friday, Fox News’ Howard Kurtz pointed out some of the more extreme examples of the left treating the Orlando shooting as a political cudgel with which to attack the right. He cites the NY Daily News, Joy Behar of The View and the NY Times in particular.

“You know it makes me really angry when pundits and politicians seize on a horrifying tragedy like what happened in Orlando to score cheap political points,” Kurtz said. After holding up the NY Daily News cover (“Thanks, NRA!”) Kurtz added, “Even if you vehemently disagree with the NRA’s policies on background checks or no-fly list, that’s ugly stuff.”

Kurtz then read a few lines from the NY Times editorial which blamed the attacks on “Republican politicians.” (Hot Air covered that hot mess in detail here.) “That conflates two things, disagreements about gay rights legislation or policies and the senseless slaughter of 49 Americans,” Kurtz said.

Kurtz didn’t spare the right either, noting John McCain’s statement about President Obama being responsible and a statement made this week by Pat Robertson. Kurtz seems to be the one of the few figures in the media who is pointing out how unhinged the coverage, particularly on the left, has been. He didn’t even mention some of the attacks on Republicans by supposedly mainstream outlets.
