Poll: Trump leads Cruz in California by 34 points

A poll released Monday by KABC Los Angeles finds Donald Trump has a 34 points lead over Ted Cruz in the state. The poll, which was conducted by Survey USA at the end of last month, finds Trump at 54%, Cruz at 20% and Kasich at 16 percent.

KABC reports “51 percent of registered voters and 88 percent of strong Democrats have an extremely negative view of Trump, while 14 percent of registered voters and 45 percent of strong Republicans have an extremely positive view of Trump.” In other words, Trump is 37 points underwater with registered voters in the state. Hillary Clinton is also underwater with voters but by a more modest 12 points.

Of course it’s not surprise that despite Trump’s strong showing against his rivals for the GOP nomination, California voters say they will vote overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton in the general election. KABC reports the results of hypothetical match-ups against Clinton in the general election:

Hillary Clinton defeats Donald Trump by 56 percent to 34 percent.
Hillary Clinton defeats Ted Cruz by 57 percent to 29 percent.
Hillary Clinton defeats John Kasich by 53 percent to 34 percent.

John Kasich often does better on this question than Trump. His more moderate stances have made him more appealing in some states. But it doesn’t seem to make a difference in California where he gets the same 34% as Trump.

The California primary takes place on June 7th. The current RCP average of polls (which includes this poll by Survey USA) has Trump leading Cruz by 26.4 points.
