The better Israel does in its ongoing retaliation against Iran and its terrorist proxies, the more it seems as if their supposed allies have lined up to thwart their efforts in every fashion imaginable. The latest to join the parade was French President Emmanuel Macron who is no longer willing to settle for Israel "showing restraint" against Lebanon and other targets. Yesterday, on a French radio program, Macron urged a return to "a political solution" to the ongoing dispute. He clarified what he meant, saying that the West should end arms deliveries to Israel for use in Gaza. The response from Prime Minister Netanyahu was rapid and unambiguous. "Shame on them," he said. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for a halt on arms deliveries to Israel for use in Gaza, prompting swift criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Macron told France Inter radio that "the priority is that we return to a political solution, that we stop delivering weapons to fight in Gaza".
At a summit in Paris on Saturday, the French president reiterated his concern over the conflict in Gaza continuing despite ceasefire calls, and he also criticised Israel's decision to send ground troops into Lebanon.
Netanyahu pushed back: "Shame on them," referring to Macron and other Western leaders who have called for what he described as an arms embargo on Israel.
While it's unfortunate to say, this should have been predictable. Nearly every step of the way, Joe Biden has set the tone for the rest of Israel's allies. He has withheld certain weapons and attempted to restrict the use of others as he's done with Ukraine. When asked if Israel should strike Iran's nuclear facilities, he said no. Our other allies still take their cues on such things from the United States for some reason and Biden has been rolling out the welcome mat for others to try to freeze Israel out. Macron is simply taking the process to the next logical level, at least in his mind.
Ol course, France is part of the furthest left block of NATO countries that lends its voice to the United Nations and the antisemitic leaders in that organization. Of course, Macron didn't stop there. He further criticized Israel's decision to send its military forces into Lebanon. We shouldn't expect this situation to change very much if Kamala Harris is elected President. She will simply inherit and carry on with most of Biden's policies. The world may look very different in that event.
A different type of realignment will be in order if Trump wins. Those who support Israel are hoping for that outcome, but it will force France and other similar nations to take a fresh look at just how bluntly they can seek to bury a knife in Israel's back. Trump will be ready to support Netanyahu from day one, but that could make for some awkward moments around the conference table at the next meeting of the G7.
