I’m not saying it’s time to burn down the universities, but…

Princeton is getting in on the wave of copycat protests at colleges and universities around the nation, determining that the institution is essentially racist by definition. (Yes… Princeton.) But rather than poop swastikas or burning crosses, the problems at the Ivy League icon run much deeper. The protesters want Woodrow Wilson scrubbed from the pages of history because raaaaacism. Students staged a protest Wednesday inside the office of Princeton University’s president, demanding the school remove the name of former school president and U.S. President Woodrow Wilson from programs and buildings over what they said was his racist legacy.

Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber told the students he agreed with them that Wilson was racist and that the university needs to acknowledge that, according to a video posted to YouTube. But a school spokesman said the president also told students it is important to weigh Wilson’s racism, and how bad it was, with the contributions he made to the nation.

The protesters, known as the “Black Justice League” (who, by the way, have still failed to capture either the Joker or the Penguin) already managed to have some of their demands met. The school is eliminating the title “Master” for the top position at each of the six residential colleges at the school. No word yet on whether or not a Masters Degree will be changed to read “Community Organizers Degree” but we’ll keep you updated.

Returning to Wilson for a moment, he wasn’t just the President of Princeton, the Governor of New Jersey and the POTUS. He was one of the leading liberal leaders of his time. The fact that he was insufficiently sensitive to racial issues from 1913 to 1921 when viewed through the lens of 21st century politics is about as surprising as discovering that water is wet. Sure, he supported segregation, but during that era, who didn’t? He was a product of his times and we shouldn’t forget that the man was born in the 1850s. Holding him to a 2015 standard more than 90 years after he died is simply the politics of the absurd. Wilson was as close as you were going to find to a progressive leader during his time in power and he was a dove who kept us out of the first world war until reality smacked him around enough to force his hand.

How long will it be before these various, misguided students simply demand the erasure of all of United States history so that nobody’s special feelings are hurt? Will we see student activists demanding that John F. Kennedy be removed from all pillars and public buildings? After all, the guy refused to allow Sammy Davis jr to perform at the White House after he married a white woman. And speaking of women, JFK’s feelings on female equality were, er… controversial to say the least. And that’s a guy who was serving in the nation’s highest office during the rise of the civil rights movement. Surely his sins are far greater than Wilson’s, who lived in what was essentially a completely different world.

A note to the parents sending their special snowflakes to Princeton: the tuition there this year is $45,150. You must be so happy with your investment.
