The goal is for the experience to resemble getting the flu shot.
State health departments are still finalizing plans, but hospitals and large pharmacy chains, such as CVS and Walgreens, are expected to be among those administering the early vaccines.
By late spring and summer, independent pharmacies and local health clinics and doctors’ offices will probably be administering vaccines, as well.
Some state health officials are also considering novel approaches, such as outdoor and drive-thru clinics, to allow for large numbers of people to get dosed safely.
In Louisiana, Ochsner Health has been running drive-thru flu vaccine clinics as a model for how the health system will administer the Covid-19 vaccine. Patients are scheduled in 10-15 minute intervals and pull up to a curbside dosing station where a health care worker administers the vaccine.
