The Lonely Only

A few weeks ago, guest host Tal Bachman tackled the Lindsay Clancy trial in Clubland Q&A. At the time, there were indications there might be a hung jury with one or two holdouts and Tal surmised the fault lines would be gender related - that is that the majority would be voting in favor but one or two women would be voting not guilty by reason of insanity.

Well, surprise, surprise:

Now, I will let you in on a little inside baseball:

At our own trial - Mann vs Steyn - in the DC Superior Court there were six jurors and four alternates.

Originally, the judge tried to get Mark to agree to only five jurors, but Mark objected on the grounds that:

A jury of five is not acceptable to this defendant. Five isn't a jury; it's a bridge party plus someone to refill the drinks.

So we got six.

We had to voir dire approximately seventy people. In a town that is 42% black, 37% white and 12% latino, we only wound up with three African-Americans: one female juror and two alternates, one male, one female. Weird.

The black female juror spent a great deal of time making goo goo eyes at Bill Nye - The Non-Science Guy - who had introduced himself to the jurors in the hallway as Michael Mann's pal on day one. Her main news source was "youtube".
