Millions of Americans have choked on the smoke-filled air in recent weeks caused by Canadian wildfires. As President Trump and Republicans blame our northern neighbor for the conditions, the legacy media have leapt to “fact-check” such claims, instead pointing to a favorite culprit: climate change. The fault was not Canada but all of ours for refusing to address emissions of greenhouse gases, with America, according to legacy media, even more guilty than Canada could possibly be. Their quoted experts and soothsayers dispassionately said so.
CNN didn’t even bother to quote an expert, simply asserting in a recent piece in the outlet’s “Climate” news section that (emphasis mine): “this summer proves we don’t have to wait until the future for climate change to smack us in the face. From torrid heat waves, to deadly flash floods, to raging wildfires and their associated acrid smoke — the signs are all around us, right now. The disasters of late are what global warming looks like.”
Beating back criticisms from Trump and Republicans that the fires were Canada’s fault, the New York Times published a piece titled “Most Forest Fires in Canada Are Simply Impossible to Put Out,” quoting an expert to say that these uncontrollable blazes are “largely…due to human-caused climate change.”
Politico relied on unidentified “climate and public health advocates” (not even experts, mind you, just activists) to assert that increasing wildifres “are a consequence of climate change” without providing additional substantiation.
