Bupkiss: What Does It Mean to Be a Women’s College If Men Can Enroll?

Salem College, a private liberal arts college in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, describes itself as the “Oldest educational institution for girls and women in the United States.” But its gender equity policy defines eligible applicants as those who “were assigned female at birth or identify as women.”

According to the college’s website, Salem strives to be a “welcoming, gender-inclusive space,” centering its educational experience on “those who are female or identify as such.”

To make sure this isn’t just marketing language, I started an undergraduate application myself. The application allowed me to select “male” as my sex and displayed the following statement:
