Of Course, You Know ... This Means War

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday renaming the Department of Defense the Department of War.

The formal renaming of the department would require Congress to act, but the order is expected to say the new name can be used in official correspondence and ceremonial contexts and non-statutory documents.

Congress will have to act to make it official. I'd expect that to be accomplished in the all-but-certain continuing resolution that will need to pass by the end of the month as a rider on spending that Democrats can't afford to tank. Even apart from the symbolic sense of focusing on warfighting, as Pete Hegseth likes to remind everyone, it also makes sense in a different way. If we have a Department of Homeland Security, why would we need a Department of Defense?
