What Walz is doing is attaching a positional good—in this case to the issue of climate change but like to a whole lot of other issues as well—to where he stands, then trying to craft rhetoric that makes that positional good sound even better. That’s part of the problem with the whole idea of a positional good in the first place.

If we accept this, however, we can accept any number of other positional goods, and some of them are far less benign.
