Don't Get Your Hopes Up With Bowman's Humiliation

Bowman’s defeat is notable insofar he is the first member of the Squad to be defeated. Representing heavily Democratic districts, the Squad need to be opposed and taken down by internal party opponents if they are to be taken down at all.

Bowman didn’t wear well in a suburban district with a substantial Jewish voter base. Bowman’s theory of the case seemed to be that he could go out of his way to offend a large segment of his constituency without consequences.

Bowman was ripe for the plucking by a decent if colorlessly liberal Democratic opponent. It would be nice to think that Bowman’s defeat represented a harbinger of the Democrats’ drift back to something approximating normalcy, but that ship has sailed. Bowman is an unusually stupid politician.

Jazz has a similarly cautious take here. I have a little more optimism. After all, Bowman has always been nutty, but he still won two House races in this district (or at least one after redistricting). The sharp turn by the Squad and progressive Left may well end up costing the Squad in the long run as their earlier Jewish allies look for better candidates. Just because one didn't materialize in AOC's and Rashida Tlaib's districts this time doesn't mean they won't in 2026.
