Columbia U Faculty Pass No-Confidence Motion on Minouche Shafik

The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University passed a vote of no confidence in president Minouche Shafik on Thursday, multiple outlets reported.

Why it matters: The move reflects the discontentment felt by some on campus with Shafik's recent congressional testimony and her response to pro-Palestinian student protests. ...

What's inside: The no-confidence resolution, against Shafik condemned her for violating "the fundamental requirements of academic freedom" and for "her unprecedented assault on students' rights," saying both require "unequivocal and emphatic condemnation."

I'd be happier about this if it weren't for the fact that the rebuke is apparently for not indulging the rioters more. The faculty senate debated this issue three weeks ago but never bothered to discuss the rampant anti-Semitism on campus that the riots exposed.

Still, Shafik earned her humiliation. She tried to waffle and both sides want her out of the way now. As I quipped on Twitter a couple of weeks ago, I'd volunteer to replace her as long as I got full authority to make the changes necessary to restore education to Columbia. And maybe an honorary degree at the end would be nice too.
