Did a Texas Surgeon Cook Transplant Records to Deny Patients Life-Saving Treatment?

For decades, Dr. J. Steve Bynon Jr., a transplant surgeon in Texas, gained accolades and national prominence for his work, including by helping to enforce professional standards in the country’s sprawling organ transplant system.

But officials are now investigating allegations that Dr. Bynon was secretly manipulating a government database to make some of his own patients ineligible to receive new livers, potentially depriving them of lifesaving care. ...

Hospital officials said they found patients had been listed as accepting only donors with ages and weights that were impossible — for instance, a 300-pound toddler — making them unable to receive any transplant.

According to the allegations, a number of Bynon's patients died while waiting for a transplant for which their eligibility had been essentially cancelled. This is a bizarre story, but apparently the allegations are serious enough that the Houston hospital where Bynon worked didn't just suspend him but also the transplant programs entirely. It's the equivalent of nuking it from space as the only way to be sure.

We have met some wonderful doctors in the transplant field. We've met at least one arrogant [expletive] too. But we've never met any doctor who we would suspect of undermining access to life-saving care.
