Trump’s lawyers asked Justice Arthur Engoron for a “directed verdict,” which is a finding that no one could reasonably rule in favor of the opposing party.
Engoron is unlikely to grant the request as he has already found that Trump and 10 of his businesses committed persistent fraud. However, Engoron’s ruling covered only one of the seven fraud counts Trump faces….
Trump’s lawyer Christopher Kise built on that argument on Thursday, saying banks that did business with the Trump Organization profited from the loans.
“There’s no victim. There’s no complainant. There’s no injury. All of that is established now,” Kise said.
[This is a pro forma motion. No one believes Engoron will grant it, not even Trump’s attorneys. Kise is correct about this being a fraud case without any victims, a point that will be strongest on appeal — along with plenty of evidence of judicial bias. But Engoron is clearly not going to void a case on which he’s already declared Trump guilty. — Ed]
