Most Americans say it is very or somewhat important for the U.S. to protect Israel. Republicans are nearly twice as likely as Democrats and Independents to say this is very important.
Just 22% of Democrats want to increase U.S. military support to Israel, compared to 48% of Republicans; 29% of Democrats and 10% of Republicans want to decrease U.S. military support.
The situation is reversed for U.S. humanitarian aid to the Palestinians: 45% of Democrats want to increase it, compared to 8% of Republicans; 10% of Democrats would decrease it, compared to 42% of Republicans. …
Just 33% strongly or somewhat approve of how President Biden is handling the Israel-Hamas war, while 41% disapprove. A majority of Democrats approve, but 23% do not. Approval of Biden’s overall job performance as president has dropped to nearly his lowest level ever: 39% approve and 57% disapprove. (In June 2022, 36% approved and 57% disapproved.)
[Via an e-mail from the pollster. One of us may pick this up and do more analysis, but it’s worth pointing out a couple of obvious takeaways. First, although Joe Biden is pretty much following public opinion in his actions thus far in the Gaza war, he’s not getting much credit for it. One reason may be the Hamas Caucus among Democrats, who are more likely to want less aid to Israel, while far more want to increase aid to the Palestinians. — Ed]
