Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday suspended a prominent Republican Miami political figure from after his arrested in connection with an alleged $245,000 money laundering and bribery scheme.
The suspension of Miami City Commissioner Alex Diaz de Portilla, a 58-year-old former state senator, came a day after he and an attorney, William W. Riley Jr., were both arrested by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in the scheme.
It was the second scandal to rock city hall after Diaz de la Portilla’s colleague, Joe Carollo, was found guilty earlier this year in an unrelated civil trial of unlawfully pressuring city officials to shut down a business he didn’t like.
Diaz de la Portilla’s arrest, which almost happened during a city commission meeting, was expected by local reporters who had been tracking the brewing investigation.
