So they claimed these five films cost $1.3 billion.
But the actual costs are $2.29 billion.
In addition, each of these films had a marketing budget of at least $150 million, and most had expensive reshoots which are probably not tallied in the British filings.
The five films cost, then, more than $3 billion.
And how much did the movies actually generated in income?
[Hint: Once you account for the splits with cinemas at home and abroad — especially China — the franchise didn’t quite get out of the red, according to Valiant Renegade. Read it all, but remember that merchandising brings in an enormous amount of money for Star Wars, plus the video sales and streaming revenue have yet to be considered. That ancillary revenue might be enough for Disney to take a slight loss in cinematic release — for Star Wars, anyway. The rest of their films and franchises don’t have that kind of built-in merchandising and ancillary markets, though. — Ed]
