In a last-minute push to fill classrooms, Houston ISD is seeking to waive Texas certification requirements for the upcoming school year in order to potentially hire hundreds of uncertified teachers.
The district has started the process of applying for a waiver from the Texas Education Agency to allow individuals to teach without the necessary certification requirements, according to a spokesperson for Superintendent Mike Miles, so that HISD campuses can start the school year in August with as few teacher vacancies as possible.
“We know we are going to struggle to find certified teachers to fill those gaps, so we are starting a process to find full-time teachers who do not have certification but do have degrees, to ensure parents have what they deserve for their children: a full-time dedicated teacher in every classroom,” the spokesperson said.
