NFL team owners unanimously approved Josh Harris’s purchase of the Washington Commanders from Daniel Snyder on Thursday, the first step in what the team and its supporters hope will be a cleansing and prosperous new era after more than two decades of turmoil and disappointment.
The owners met at a Minneapolis-area hotel for a special league meeting to ratify the record-setting $6.05 billion. The deal could close as soon as Friday, officially completing the once-proud franchise’s first ownership change since Snyder bought the team and its stadium in Landover, Md., from the Jack Kent Cooke estate in 1999 for $800 million.
[Yeah, Snyder’s crying all the way to the bank, but good riddance anyway. Too bad he can’t take Roger Goodell with him. Maybe the new owner can rethink the name change; they won’t go back to Redskins, but “Commanders” is lame-o. One interesting note: Harris has a minority stake in the Steelers, which he’ll have to sell. — Ed]
