The main suspect in the 2005 disappearance of U.S. student Natalee Holloway was handed over to U.S. custody and departed Peru on a flight to the United States, roughly a month after both countries agreed on his extradition. https://t.co/4T9ID51Yg1

[He won’t be charged with murder, which technically took place outside US jurisdiction. Van der Sloot allegedly attempted to extort the Holloways in 2010, and the DoJ indicted him at that time on one count of extortion and one count of wire fraud. Let’s just say, though, that prosecutors will likely demand the severest possible sentence on his conviction, and are likely to get it, assuming they succeed. I’d bet that van der Sloot tries to make a deal to get a lesser sentence in return for revealing where Holloway’s remains are. — Ed]
