IMDB changes rating algorithm over negative reviews for 'Little Mermaid'

The Internet Movie Database has changed its rating system for the newly-released live-action “Little Mermaid” amid “unusual voting activity.”

The Halle Bailey-led film has a 7/10 rating on the site.

But a few crabby users — also known as review bombers — are allegedly giving the Disney flick negative scores for no good reason.

“Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied,” a note on the US, Canadian, U.K., Brazilian, and Mexican “Little Mermaid” pages reads.

[I wonder if IMDB was similarly concerned about online ratings for ‘Chappaquiddick’? With that said, though, IMDB may have good reason to adjust in this case. Disney went out of its way to politicize this film and the rest of the mainstream media followed suit, and the resulting polarization has no doubt produced its share of trolls in the comments and ratings systems — in both directions, even. That’s not the fault of IMDB, but they do need to figure out a way to ensure the integrity of their rating system. I’d bet Rotten Tomatoes is experiencing the same issue on its audience scores and may be quietly looking for ways to correct for it too. — Ed]
