Elon Musk’s Twitter has been replacing Rupert Murdoch’s Fox News as the leader in breaking news with conservative media, with the right turning away from the broadcast network and centering on Twitter for news on the Republican Party while the 2024 election rolls into play.
In the past month since Fox News fired its prime-time star, Tucker Carlson, Fox’s ratings in the 8 p.m. hour have sunk, with viewers flocking to rival Newsmax, and Carlson unveiled plans to bring a “new version” of his Fox News show to Twitter, proclaiming that “the news you consume is a lie,” reports Axios.
[*Breaking* news? Maybe. I’ve relied on Twitter for real breaking news for years now, as it’s more immediate and a good testing ground for reliability. But Twitter isn’t a news organization, nor does it pretend to be, and the breaking news one does reliably find on Twitter comes from the feeds of news orgs. It may turn into a platform where commentators can launch talk shows, and Tucker may be the first to try that at scale on any social media platform if and when he begins ‘broadcasting’ on Twitter. But news orgs and cable nets have a big advantage in providing in-depth reporting and reliable commentary … if they don’t choose to squander it. — Ed]
