The University of Georgia Bulldogs will not visit the White House after receiving an invitation to do so because of an unspecified scheduling conflict.
The Bulldogs football team won their second consecutive national championship in January of this year. The team subsequently received an invitation in May to attend a June 12 “College Athlete Day” at the presidential residence, CBS News reported. …
No college football team has visited the White House since January of 2019, when the Louisiana State University Tigers won the championship.
[In 2020, the pandemic hit. That covers the 2021 visits, too. But passing in 2022 and this year sounds like something else is in play. Maybe schools don’t want to wade into politics, which would be fine by me if they’d refrain altogether and consistently. With any luck, the championship-visit tradition will die off and then we can avoid the performative refusals in the future as well. — Ed]
