The Raiders traded for receiver Davante Adams, Carr’s good friend and former Fresno State teammate, with hopes of having the offense lead the Raiders to a second straight playoff appearance. But the offense has underachieved under coach Josh McDaniels and Carr in their first season together. His completion percentage of 60.8 and passer rating of 86.3 are his lowest since his rookie season and his 7.0 yards per attempt and 235 yards per game are his lowest since 2017. The 14 interceptions tie a career high.
The move to bench him and start Stidham would appear to be a clear sign that the team plans to move on from Carr in the offseason.
The Raiders can cut Carr after the season because that combined $40.4 million for 2023 and ’24 become fully guaranteed on Feb. 15, three days after the Super Bowl. But a more likely scenario is that the two sides agree to a trade to another team. Carr was given a no-trade clause in exchange for agreeing to the out and would have to approve any trade destination.
[IMHO, the problem with the Raiders isn’t Carr, but a combination of personnel and coaching. Carr may not be the best QB in the league, but he’s better than some other starters. He’s a lot better than the QBs that will be active for the Raiders in their next game. Jason Stidham has thrown for a whole 72 yards in three appearances this season, and Chase Garbers hasn’t played at all on the main team this year. — Ed]
