According to reports in The Guardian, police said the attacker, a 27-year-old German citizen, shouted “Allahu akbar” as he launched his bloody attack, and said they believed the incident was “politically motivated.”

The vicious attack took place shortly before 5 a.m. local time in Grafing, a rural area some 20 miles from Munich.

A spokesman for the Bavarian prosecutors’ office said the suspect “made remarks at the scene of the crime that indicate a political motive,” but added “We are still determining what the exact remarks were.”
Police said intial unverified eyewitness accounts indicated the suspect shouted “Allahu akbar” (“God is great”) during the attack.
