A case of FGM is reported in England every 109 minutes

Children’s charity Plan UK has warned of the alarming scale of the “hidden danger threatening girls at home and around the world.” The latest figures reveal that a case of female genital mutilation (FGM) is recorded in England every 109 minutes.

In 2015, 2,421 cases of FGM were recorded in England from April to September, according to the government’s Health and Social Care Information Centre. Despite those numbers, there has never been a successful prosecution for FGM in the UK.

“Only now is the full scale becoming clear,” Plan UK CEO Tanya Barron said in a statement.
