The Tennessee Republican said the U.S. has “some degree of responsibility” for the humanitarian crisis created by a multifaceted war in Syria among rebels, the Islamic State and the government of Bashar Assad. Congress never authorized a war in Syria, though Corker’s committee did pass a military authorization in 2013.
“If you look at what’s happening, all these refugees that are sadly having the plight that they are, people are beginning to think back to August 2013 and realizing we took no steps,” Corker told reporters Tuesday night. “The inaction by the administration in 2013 has hugely multiplied the disaster that’s taking place. I don’t think there’s any debate about that. And so therefore certainly the United States has some degree of responsibility here.”
