Ms. Stefanik opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest or where the life of the woman is at stake. But she also says the Republican Party has at times come off as “combative and intolerant of women or anyone who may have differing positions” on abortion, a posture she says contributed to GOP losses in 2012.
“That was a big lesson, I think, hopefully learned by all Republicans,” Ms. Stefanik said.
“I just think it’s the tone. Even if you disagree on issues…I always think it’s important that you respect and be tolerant of those that have heartfelt opinions on the other side.”
She also has kind words for U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand , a New York Democrat who recruited Ms. Stefanik to play in the Congressional Women’s Softball Game.
“She asked me if I would relieve her as the pitcher. I think she’s getting tired of pitching,” said Ms. Stefanik, who says she has decent skills on the field.
