America should apologize to the Kurds

We haven’t equipped, trained or otherwise supported the Kurds or other friendly Syrians opposed to Assad because Obama didn’t want to hear about another Mideast war, even with the top people at State, Defense and CIA urging him to help Assad’s foes. (Heck, even Jimmy Carter now says Obama blew it on ISIS. )

Plus, the administration insisted, we don’t know who’s who in Syria, so better not aid the wrong people. To play it safe, we aided no one.

Result: As Biden noted, the bloodiest Islamists in Syria got help from wealthy Gulf backers and Turkish ideologues. On the other side, Assad got Russia, Iran and Hezbollah to back him. And our would-be allies faded.

And, oops: We’re now (sorta) involved in a Mideast war anyway.
