3) Show you care about the 47 percent.
Republican governors will run in 2014 as compassionate conservatives, eager to undo the damage created by Romney’s comment that he was not concerned about the 47 percent of the country who would never vote for Republicans.
“Instead of showing Americans that the ‘R’ next to his name stood for ‘reformer,’ Romney let the Obama campaign convince Americans it stood for ‘rich’ and ‘out of touch,’” Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker writes in his new book. “You can’t win the presidency when nearly two thirds of the country thinks you don’t care about their struggles.”
Walker beat back a recall in June while Obama carried his state in November.
McDonnell said Romney is a good man and did not mean his infamous 47 percent remark the way it came out.
“It’s not fair, it’s not right, but yet we do have a perception that we’re not as inclusive and as caring as Democrats,” he said. “Our policies are working, but we’ve got to do a lot better on talking.”
