Afghan President Hamid Karzai unexpectedly extended an official visit to Pakistan on Monday to continue discussions with the Pakistani government about bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table.
Afghan officials had billed Mr. Karzai’s visit as a one-day stop to meet with Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. But Monday evening, the Afghan presidential palace said Mr. Karzai and his delegation would stay overnight in Islamabad at the request of Mr. Sharif.
A senior Afghan official said the delegations would continue discussions Tuesday about enlisting Pakistan’s support in reaching out to the Afghan Taliban, who have been fighting a long-running insurgency against the government in Kabul.
“The meetings have been going very well,” the official said. “A lot of issues were discussed, including the peace process and how the Pakistani side can help.”
