Of the 33 times states have voted on gay marriage ballot measures since 1998, opponents of gay marriage have won 32 times. But the bulk of those votes took place between 1998 and 2006 — and polls have shown increased support for same-sex marriage in recent years…

What’s striking about the Stateline map is the coastal breakdown — the tell-tale sign of the red state/blue state sensibilities. The states that allow gay marriage are clustered in the Northeast, with Maryland as a possible new addition. On the West Coast, Washington and California rank as states where same-sex marriage is designated as “in limbo.”
