Social conservatives warn GOP: Don’t take us for granted

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, says he and others are working with Republican leadership to construct a platform that acknowledges the importance of social issues to conservative voters. The result, he said, will be a key test of GOP leaders’ dedication to one of their core constituencies.

“We’re going to see what their public commitment is to [social] issues when they release the statement,” Perkins said. “They don’t want to spend precious time with the conservative movement kind of in an internal fight because they left out one element or two elements.”…

So far, codifying the Hyde Amendment to prevent the Democrats’ health care legislation from using federal money on abortion is the only item discussed in a GOP internal document obtained by POLITICO. The paper was distributed to Republican members in August and outlined their agenda for the summer work period — a document that an aide said would provide a “hint” of what can be expected from the GOP’s final agenda proposal.
