NYT editorial board on the Olympics: What was Obama thinking?

We don’t doubt Mr. Obama’s devotion to his adopted hometown. Or that Chicago would have been a great place for the Games. Leaders from all the other countries bidding showed up, too. And we don’t buy the posturing by Republicans who said that his trip meant he was neglecting the nation’s business. But in the midst of everything Mr. Obama is dealing with, who needs even a minor loss?…

We like having an articulate, fiercely competitive president, especially one with such a strong moral compass. But guys, if you’re going to roll the dice, next time make sure the stakes are worth it.
