"Her new running mate, who’s a veteran and a former teacher with a Midwestern demeanor, holds an appeal that could be critical in the three states — Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan — and could make or break the race.

"“He’s a firewall candidate,” said Antjuan Seawright, a South Carolina-based Democratic strategist. “He certainly is respected, not only because of his resume and his body of work, but he’s respected as an executive, he’s respected as a former member of Congress, he yields the support of America’s heartbeat, that’s teachers in this country.”"

From Ed: You know who's not convinced? MSNBC's Steve Kornacki, who explains why Walz is just another vanilla Democrat in Minnesota. This likely doesn't do anything for Harris in Minnesota, let alone Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. Anyone in Minnesota could have explained this, or anyone who can read electoral results.

"We do not need to see poop on the street, and cities burning down."

"People fled those jurisdictions [...] Why would we want that for the United States?"

"His style was seen by at least some in Harris’ world as showboating. One senior Democrat in touch with Harris’ team called it “counterproductive.”

"And there was a sense within Shapiro’s team that, unlike Walz, his interview with Harris did not go as well as it could have. There was “not a great feeling” coming out of it, according to a person in touch with his advisers.

"After their meeting on Sunday, Shapiro called Harris’ team and made clear that he was “struggling with the decision to leave his current job as governor of Pennsylvania, in order to seek the vice presidency,” according to a person familiar with the selection process."

"Unlike his fellow VP contender Governor Josh Shapiro in Pennsylvania, Walz sticks to the hardline Democratic arguments around school choice, rejecting the idea of a voucher system which would give parents more control over where their child attends school. He also legalized cannabis in his state — possibly a credential Harris does need among her base, given her long-standing (and heavily criticized) reputation for using non-violent drug user convictions to increase the prison population of California when she was district attorney and attorney general.

"Still, the Walz of the past five years looks most similar to the Harris that was running to be the Democratic presidential nominee back in 2019: both progressive, both advocating a much bigger role for the state. Walz’s shift is best summed up by perhaps his most famous endorsement leading up to Harris’s decision: from democratic-socialist and Senator Bernie Sanders, who has been calling on the vice president to select someone Walz for his ability to “understand the needs of working families.”"

From Ed: Joe Soucheray is a popular radio host in the Twin Cities with a significant following. This comes to us via Alpha News, which has done an outstanding job of covering Walz' administration the past several years.

From Ed: From the Republicans Pounce!™ Department, here's Politico ...

"Now, Republicans are moving quickly to define on their own terms the little-known Minnesota governor who has now been thrust onto the national stage, painting Walz as a far-left “radical” and “wannabe” coastal elite — just as Democrats quickly leapt on Vance’s elevation to fuel an almost nonstop bad news cycle since his selection.

"“That guy has done so much stuff, he’s just going to be a gift to the battleground states,” said Dave Carney, a Republican strategist who heads the pro-Trump super PAC Preserve America, referring to Walz’s record as governor. “It’s great for our side because they really blew it.”"
