Authorities say an elementary school in an Oklahoma City suburb took a direct hit from a mile-wide tornado.
Gary Knight with the Oklahoma City Police Department says there is no word of injuries from the elementary school. Knight says the school suffered “extensive damage” on Monday afternoon.
Moore actually had almost exactly the same thing happen in 1999, in a storm that had the highest winds ever recorded on the surface of the Earth. At one point, the National Weather Service warned that the tornado approaching Moore, Oklahoma would be so large that people on the ground might not even recognize it as one:
The National Weather Service is cautioning that the tornado passing through Moore is so large that people may not recognize it as a twister.
Forecasters urgently warned people in Moore on Monday afternoon to seek immediate shelter.

Two small children have been confirmed killed, according to CBS’ live report. However, KFOR is reporting that at least some of the kids were safely evacuated:
One child, about 8 to 10 years old, walked out of the school, KFOR reporter says. 30 reportedly were safely evacuated.

Later, News9 reported that all of the children at Briarwood Elementary have been accounted for.
A smaller tornado touched down near Meeker and headed straight for the town.
