New Romney ad hits Obama as out of touch with small business

This starts with an interview Barack Obama gave this week to a local TV station in Iowa, in which Obama dismisses the idea that small businesses have any worries over the costs of ObamaCare.

KTIV-TV (Sioux City, Iowa) reporter Matt Breen: “One of those businesses that I mentioned said very specifically when they said they needed to close up shop and move their jobs back to Wisconsin was that it was a direct result of the health care reform that you initiated, that Congress passed. How do you react to that?”

President Obama: “That would be kind of hard to explain, because the only folks that have been impacted in terms of the health care bill are insurance companies who are required to make sure that they’re providing preventive care, or they’re not dropping your coverage when you get sick. And so, this particular company probably wouldn’t have been impacted by that. I know that there’s a perception sometimes that there’s all kinds of regulations coming out of Washington, the truth is actually we’ve seen fewer regulations coming out of my administration than the previous administration. But obviously, you know it’s tough running a small business no matter what. And we’re going to make sure that we continue to provide whatever financing help that we can provide.”

This ignores more than a few inconvenient truths about ObamaCare.  First, if the insurance companies are getting “impacted” by costly mandates, just who picks up the tab for that?  Their customers, and smaller employers will get hit harder by those costs than larger employers.  Second, ObamaCare forces businesses that have over 49 employees to provide health insurance coverage or pay stiff fines for non-compliance.  That provides a lot of incentive to downsize (or to keep from upsizing) to get under the threshold, and one way to do that is to contract into one facility and eliminate any duplication of effort.  And those are just the two most obvious ways in which ObamaCare impacts business.

Needless to say, Mitt Romney had an opening to attack Obama after this clip surfaced, and he did so yesterday on Fox & Friends.  Romney noted that 75% of small business owners say that they would be less likely to hire more employees because of the bill, according to a recent US Chamber of Commerce survey.  That shows just how out of touch Obama is from small business owners across the country, Romney argued:

And within 24 hours, Team Romney has a new web ad hitting Obama’s ignorance on his own policy:

The only complaint I’d make about the ad is that the “REPEAL OBAMACARE” line is pretty small and difficult to read, although the point is clear enough.
