The RNC calls this ad “Meanwhile,” but perhaps they could have called it “While Obama Wears Prada.”  Jazz wrote yesterday about the Barack Obama campaign ad starring Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, widely known to be the model for the sadistic boss in the book and film The Devil Wears Prada.  The ad itself has to be seen to be believed.  Bear in mind that this is the same campaign that has spent much of the past month and more slamming Mitt Romney for being a member of the 1%, for being out of touch with the reality of working-class Americans.  And their new ambassador to the working class is … “Nuclear” Wintour?

The parodies will write themselves, but the RNC mainly plays this one straight.  Instead of overtly ridiculing the ad, they simply play it in the background while pointing out that Obama attended six — six — fundraisers the day that the disastrous jobs report came out on Friday, and then reminds viewers that joblessness is up in every category over the last four years:

Fox News’ Chris Wallace: “Here’s another blunder that you may not have seen. On the day, Friday, when all of the bad economic news came out, the Obama campaign decided that was the day to release a video of Anna Wintour. If you don’t know her, she is the editor of a fashion magazine, Vogue. Saying to people contribute to the Obama campaign and you can come to a big exclusive dinner in New York that Sarah Jessica Parker and I are hosting. Take a look at this.”

Vogue’s Anna Wintour: “Sarah Jessica and I both have our own reasons for supporting President Obama, and we want to hear yours. So please join us, but just don’t be late.”

Wallace: “Yes, don’t be late. And this is on the day when we find out that the economy created only 69,000 jobs. First of all, do you subscribe to Chip’s idea that the campaign is off to a shaky start, and if so, how big a deal.” Fox News’

Juan Williams: “By the way, that was hilarious. That looks like a parody. It looked like the Romney campaign planted Dr. Evil in the house of Obama and he said, ‘you know on the day the grim job numbers come out let’s have someone who reeks of ornamental excess announce that the peasants can have a place at the table.’ It’s just unbelievable. I mean, so you know, just a mistake.”

Speaking of the peasantry, the lowest ticket price for any of these fundraisers was $2500 a pop.  Looks like the only way the peasants get to see the King is if Wintour allows them access:

Flying to Minnesota under the banner of “official business” – an event at a Honeywell factory in a Minneapolis suburb – Obama will quickly turn to politics, lunching with three separate sets of donors at the downtown Bachelor Farmer restaurant, an eatery owned by Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton’s two sons, Eric and Andrew.

The president will first address a group of 100 guests, each paying $5,000 a plate.  He then will meet privately with two small roundtables of deep-pocket supporters – one group paying $40,000 per person; the other $50,000 per person, a campaign official said.  (The $50k ticket price is the largest for any Obama fundraiser held since the start of the campaign.)

Proceeds from all the events will benefit OVF, a joint fundraising account that funnels contributions to Obama for America, the Democratic National Committee and several state Democratic parties. The first $5,000 of an individual’s contribution will go directly to the Obama campaign; the remainder, up to $30,800, will go to the DNC; and anything beyond $35,800 will get distributed to state parties, officials said.

In the evening, President Obama will head to Chicago for three more fundraisers – a televised campaign reception at the Chicago Cultural Center with an estimated 350 fans (tickets will cost $2,500+ per person) and two intimate dinners at private residences.  Tickets for the dinners cost $35,800 apiece, an official said.

Unbelievable is the right word.
