If you think Barack Obama is an amateur at political leadership, just watch him as a sports commentator. CBS caught up with President Obama at halftime of the Western Kentucky-Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball championships, and was asked to give his expert analysis:

Well, I’ve got to say that both teams are shooting terribly. It may be nerves — these are not teams that end up coming to the tournament.

Really? That’s news to WKU alum and OOTD reader Craig S, who pointed me to WKU’s record in men’s basketball:

• 3 NCAA Tournament wins since 2008
• 2008 and 2009 Sun Belt Conference Champions
• Two NBA Draft picks in last four years (Courtney Lee, 1st round, 2008; Jeremy Evans, 2nd round, 2010)
• 42 conference championships, third-most in NCAA history
• 40 seasons with 20+ wins, sixth-most in NCAA history
• 38 All-Americans
• 34 national post-season appearances
• 21 NCAA Tournament berths
• 14th in NCAA history in all-time wins (1,643)
• 8th in NCAA history in all-time winning percentage (.670)
• 7 “Sweet 16” appearances in NCAA tournament
• NCAA Final Four in 1971

How about Mississippi State?  They have had 10 appearances in the NCAA tournament, making the Final Four in 1996.  In fact, six of those appearances have come in the last 14 years, meaning they got to the tournament roughly every other year during the tenure of head Coach Rick Stansbury, who resigned after losing the game to Western Kentucky.

In other words, don’t quit your day job, Mr. President.  Unless, of course, you’d like to do so.

Update: It was Mississippi Valley State that lost to WKU, not Mississippi State, which lost to UMass.  Of course, I don’t know the difference between a pick and the key, except that in most applications outside of basketball, you can use the former instead of the latter.
