Obamateurism of the Day

State of the Union speeches are dry, dull, and very predictable events … perhaps more so with Barack Obama than any other President. People know it, too, which is why the ratings for his latest effort are his lowest yet, and the third-least-watched SOTU in 20 years, according to Nielsen.  Obama may recycled the speech, but as National Journal reports, he tried to spice things up by channeling his inner Johnny Carson.  However, Obama succeeded as well as Chevy Chase:

President Obama’s attempt at humor during the State of the Union address on Tuesday drew forced laughter and looks of amusement from the first lady and Vice President Joe Biden.

“We got rid of one rule from 40 years ago that could have forced some dairy farmers to spend $10,000 a year proving that they could contain a spill — because milk was somehow classified as an oil,” Obama said while touting his efforts toward limiting government regulation. “With a rule like that, I guess it was worth crying over spilled milk.”

How did that go over?  Not even Obama’s First Lady looked terribly impressed:

Either Congress is so slow that they couldn’t get the joke, or it bombed.  Actually … it could be both, couldn’t it?

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at [email protected] with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.
