Video: A SOTU rerun?

posted at 8:40 am on January 25, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Last night, I tweeted that I would read the State of the Union speech instead of watching it on TV, and give myself two hours of my life that would otherwise have been wasted. It turned out to be an easy read, since for the third year in a row, it was written at the eighth-grade level — but that wasn’t the only aspect of the speech that was oddly familiar.  As the RNC shows in this clever video, not only did Barack Obama fail to provide a fresh look at fresh issues, he practically read the same speech from the last two years:

SOTU speeches don’t change much in style from one year to the next.  They are almost always campaign speeches, filled with wish lists and self-congratulatory nonsense.  The only one I found different to any significant degree was 2002′s SOTU speech, coming just months after 9/11 and the invasion of Afghanistan.  Otherwise, every President’s SOTU speeches follows a very predictable pattern:

  1. The State of the Union is strong.
  2. Applause.
  3. It’s stronger because I’m up here and you’re not.
  4. Applause.
  5. Attack the Supreme Court [Obama only].
  6. Here’s why my political party is awesome.
  7. Applause from one side of room.
  8. Here’s why the other party is a bunch of doody-heads.
  9. Applause from the same side of the room.
  10. Here’s a program I want you to pass.
  11. Applause.
  12. Here’s an Ordinary Average Guy whose story should convince you to pass my program.
  13. Television shot of Ordinary Average Guy.
  14. Applause.
  15. Repeat steps 6-14 about 874 times.
  16. Here’s a couple more reasons why I’m awesome.
  17. Applause.
  18. Opposition party then offers this in response (language warning):

These evenings are always reruns to a large extent.  Usually, though, a President takes some effort to come up with a new way to say the same old BS. In this case, perhaps Obama should have followed the example set by Thomas Jefferson and literally mailed in his speech if he was going to do it figuratively.

I don’t know, I kind of disagree, I think Obama spent many days writing and preparing his 2012 SOTO speech, proving beyond a doubt that his one and only plan to create jobs and lower our debt is throw money, make empty promises and hope for change.

Karl Magnus on January 25, 2012 at 9:03 AM

Obama seemed nervous at the beginning of the speech.

The applause seemed not as loud or as long in other speeches.

There was no roaring standing ovation(s) during the speech.

At one point it was confusing where he was discussing the Department of Defense and energy for 3 million homes (what?) – seemed like he skipped a paragraph when reading from the teleprompter.

In the shots of Hillary she looked very, very bad. Blurry eyed, old, stringy hair smashed back with a quick brush over, haggard, burned out.

It was not really a state of the union speech but more of a laundry list of campaign re-election talking points.

Joe Biden acted like this was all the first time he had heard of all this. And Joe really gets his bobbing up and down whenever Obama talked about the military.

And I think Obama went off script when talking about Buffet’s secretary. He seemed to add a sentence where he said that “Buffet’s secretary paid more in taxes than Buffet”. He probably meant a higher tax rate, but that was not what he said.

If you are a wonk you don’t watch the SOTU for the speech itself. You watch for the fun of the shots of the peanut gallery AKA the joint session of Congress. One classic moment was watching Hillary Clinton at her first SOTU as Senator so out of her element that the Dems literally had to assign Joe Lieberman to help her know when to clap and when to sit on her hands.

Happy Nomad on January 25, 2012 at 9:07 AM

Loved the research Ed. The speech was sort of a bore. Yet, what does it say when the Pres. has to say the same thing over and over and over that he is still very dependent on TOTUS.

What should we expect with the Chicago way….you get paid to get paid nothing to do with an actual job, doesn’t the press sec. prove this over and over again.

PuritanD71 on January 25, 2012 at 9:08 AM

Sure he read an 8th grade level speech. That is the typical American’s reading comprehension. On the other hand Mitch Daniels actually read a speech meant for adults. Which means the vast majority of American Idol viewers had no idea what the heck he was talking about.

You have to remember he was talking about it from a political point of view. I agree with Kraut. It was a pretty good political speech aimed at low-info, low IQ voters who are easily swayed by buzzwords life fairness.

Obama wasn’t speaking to convince you or Ed Morrisey. He was speaking to convince the guy that never pays attention to politics except once or twice a year like SOTU. And IMO he did a good job in that aspect.

I was going to post this story/video in the Green Room this morning, but since Ed has so eloquently provided us with the One’s rhetorical bull$**t, (love the Vinny vid), allow me to add my commentary:

Recycling Rhetoric

In an effort to prove to the nation that he is serious about preserving our environment, President Obama last night inserted into his teleprompter a recycled speech from previous SOTU addresses. Like a worn out record on an old phonograph the self-plagiarized speech was stuck repeatedly in the past, with little hope or change for the nation’s future.

This video, produced by GOP.Com should be played on a daily basis for every American who has grown tired of the rhetorical déjà vu—repeated hollow promises like the broken record or piece of clothing run through the wash cycle too many times—wearing thin. There’s only one way to deal with a broken record—you file it away with your dusty pair of Buster Brown Shoes, worn out clichés,(“Beat a dead horse“, “Face the music“, and go “Back to the drawing board”), or President Obama’s State of the Union speeches—(insert pithy comment here)

Last night the President not only “reheated” and “rewashed” much of this recycled rhetoric, he is continuing on his quest to divide this country with his assault on American individualism while spewing class warfare, ……….. The President did nothing last night to embrace or enhance a United States of America. Indeed, he set the tone for his own perpetual re-election campaign to further his political ambitions pitting one American class against another. Rinse and repeat? Or is it time to get a new washer, since this one’s failed miserably to clean anything. (rough draft)

I don’t remember him talking about any accomplishments except Bin Laden. It seems that the applause is not as noticeable due to the new seating where both sides are no longer separated. You don’t get that wave thing going like you did before, it just looks like some are applauding and some are not. Summary is Obama says “send me the bill and I’ll sign it”, the House writes a Bill and sends it to the Senate, the Senate does not pass it, Obama blames Republicans in the House. Ho hum.

It’s not just that he’s lazy which is true. It’s also that he fundamentally believes that all of that stuff he keeps repeating is actually the answer. He has no idea how anything really works and quite frankly, doesn’t care to learn. As long as he gets paid to party with celebrities, golf and take expensive vacations, what does any of it really matter to him? He’ll go off and get another job or positiion he isn’t qualified to have and people will always pay him loads of money to hear him speak. He’ll be fine. It’s the rest of us who face reality every day that are screwed.

This wasn’t aimed at conservatives, it was aimed at Obamas ever shrinking base.

And why is he always hitting the same themes that continue to be issues in this country?

Because he has failed miserably to address those issues in this country. You haven’t figured that one out yet? A little slow eh? Hey how many times does Obama plan on paying for infrastructure repair? Billions went to infrastructure repair in Obama’s failed stim plan, millions daily are put into the infrastructure repair account via the gas tax avg $0.43 per gallon every gallon
daily gas consumption is 386,000,000 gallons per day
386,000,000x .43= $165,980,000 each day, every day, or $60,582,700,000 every year
So what is Obama’s excuse for still not getting this done?

How about something new to accommodate the conservative attention span? A puppet show, perhaps.
